Traditionally, the old-school tactic for getting money out of an ATM would involve a crowbar, sledgehammer, screwdriver or even some mediocre explosives. However, such plans were profoundly flawed, yet with enough muscle on the job, since it would attract much-unwanted attention, be noisy, or even expose the “master-minds” behind them to delays that stall long enough for the police to arrive. Hacking an ATM has grown to be one of the most comfortable cybercrimes around, especially with the development of new and advanced ATM hacking software. With the automatization of every bank transaction machine, came the automatization of new ATM hacking tools.

If you were to search for ways in which you can infiltrate an ATM system online, you are guaranteed hundreds of thousands of solutions, redirection, and even ATM hacking tutorials that claim to give fail proof answers. Most of these recommendations given online are scams and other creative fraud skills that aim to get as many viewers and shares for their financial interests. Hacking and ATM may have been simplified over the past couple of decades, but without the right skills and procedures, you might just be hitting a dead-end with any of your efforts.

An ATM stores cash in a locked vault, and it’s usually protected by cameras or other security devices. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the dough is safe: like any computerized system, an ATM can be hacked. Barnaby Jack, director of security testing at the computer security company IOActive, recently demonstrated attacks on two brands of freestanding ATMs–the kind found in convenience stores rather than banks. Jack showed he could control when and how they dispensed money. He also found he could steal information from cards that legitimate customers inserted into a hacked machine. He demonstrated two types of attacks–one that required physical access to the machine and one that could be carried out remotely.

Cash machines are so easy to hack it can be done in just five minutes, a security expert has revealed.

Most cash machines are essentially Windows XP computers attached to a safe, according to the expert from Positive Technologies.

If attackers drill a hole in the front they can access a USB cable and dispense money.

If a hacked machine collects an individual's card details they can spread your data around a network of ATMs and dispense your money without you having any idea.

Most cash machines are essentially Windows XP computers attached to a safe meaning if attackers can drill a hole in the front they can access a USB cable release a user's cash.

For security reasons the video does not show how to remove the cash after finding the USB cable but the process takes just one minute.

To help protect yourself experts suggest using an ATM in a bank with security cameras on them.

Leigh-Anne Galloway, a security expert with Positive Technologies, showed BBC how to hack an ATM made by Georgian-based company NCR - one of the largest makers of the machine.

The attacker first drills a hole in the front of the machine where the keypad is.

'It's just a safe with a computer on top', Ms Galloway told BBC Click's Spencer Kelly.

'So you could put malware on this system that could collect data from cards as well', she said.

'ATM security threats are becoming more complex and sophisticated, and thus securing one’s infrastructure and endpoints is a never-ending task.

'Banks as ATM deployers must make security a high priority and stay current with all security defences, operating system upgrades, and industry recommendation', they said.

The cyber criminals are using malicious software that forces machines to spit out cash, according to Russian cyber security firm Group IB.

The heists across Europe follow the hacking of ATMs in Taiwan and Thailand that were widely reported last summer.
